TCM Tip of the Month: January 2019

Herbal Foot Soaks

This month, warm up your feet and reduce your stress with an herbal foot soak. Foot soaks have been used for centuries by many cultures for their myriad benefits. Soaking your feet can improve circulation, help heal fungus or dry cracked skin, promote sleep and detoxification. Herbal foot soaks have long been used as a stand alone remedy or to support other healing modalities. In the clinic I regularly recommend herbal foot soaks for pain, stress, menstrual cycle irregularity and fertility support. During the winter, especially if you live in a cold or snowy climate, foot baths will help keep your feet warm with proper circulation.

Here is a recipe for one of my favorite foot soaks:

Mei Gui Hua (Rose Bud) 10g – Regulates qi, relaxes digestive discomfort from stress, aromatically calms the mind

Epsom Salt 1 cup– downward draining energy to promote release of toxins and creates the feeling of being grounded. The magnesium is absorbed through the feet to reduce muscle tension and spasm.

Hong Jing Tian (Rhodiola) 10g – an adaptogen that improves the body’s response to stress, balances hypothalamic/adrenal response to perceived stress

■ Bring 2 liters of water to a boil, add herbs, reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.

■ Remove herbs, add herbal liquid to basin with 1 cup of epsom salts and enough water to cool the liquid to desire temp for soaking

■ Soak for 20 minutes, no technology during your soak!
